Row, row, row your (own) boat
Gently down the stream (with ease and joy)
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily
Life is but a dream.
Now who would have thought that this children’s song could be so filled with wisdom about how to live life? I heard this on one of Dr. Wayne Dyer’s tapes and I thought I would pass it along here to remind everyone that life is supposed to be like a gentle ride on a nice stream and even when the water gets a little rough, it is much easier if we will just keep headed down stream and stop trying to paddle so hard in the wrong direction.
Someone might say, well you are going to get taken advantage of if you live that way, but let me clarify. Taking the merry way doesn’t mean you are stuck in someone else’s boat and you have to do it their way. You are in your own boat and you should always chose the way that makes YOU feel the best.
Getting divorced did not feel good and it definitely wasn’t easy. But, being the person that I wanted to be felt great. Deciding to take my happiness back into my own boat felt amazing.
I love this very simple, yet deeply wise little song! I have contemplated its advice for living before. BUT, I had never considered the importance of the MODE of transportation! You have pointed out a very important detail – we must choose our boat ourselves! First, get into the boat – some people chose to try to swim their lives through (or worse yet, tread water), getting soaked through, chilled to the bone and exhausted – for goodness sake, stay above water and get into the boat! Second, make it your boat, not someone else’s! Third, look forward and steer – don’t face the wake and fear the turmoiled water it has created, face forward and steer into the serene water ahead! Third, envision and then embark upon the boat of your dreams, whether birchbark canoe or luxury yacht. What a fantastic analogy for life – I love it!
