All winter long, whenever I needed to take Reagan to school, I noticed this Asian lady walking her little girl or more likely, her granddaughter to the bus stop wearing a bath robe as a coat. For some reason I really wanted to give her one of my many coats, so I went home and picked her out my cream colored full length wool coat. It was pretty and warm and I hoped that she would like it. I tucked it in the back of my car and waited for an opportunity to see her. A few months passed and I never had the chance to catch her and stop and give it to her until one day in early February. There she was, walking down the hill from the bus stop and I was headed up the hill to get Reagan. I quickly pulled off into a parking lot, grabbed the coat and ran wildly to catch her. At first she thought I was a crazy lady and she walked faster and ignored my attempts to speak with her, but after some insistence, she finally stopped. I handed her the coat and said, “I would really like you to have this if you want it.” She still thought I was crazy, but she took it from me and continued her walk down the hill.
I got in my car with a hop in my step. Yeah me, I did a good deed and gave my Asian lady a coat. I saved her granddaughter from that fashion no no of a robe. I admit that we have had a fairly mild spring, so the next several times I saw her she was still wearing the bath robe and I have to say that my heart sank just a little. Was it too big? Did she really prefer her house coat to my coat? I should have given her a different one…
And then it happened…
Today, March 16th it was only about 17 degrees out and when I took Reagan to school we saw her. I yelled, “Look Reagan, she’s wearing the coat I gave her. Yeah!!!” We both cheered a little and my heart was happy.
I know I’m a goof ball, but I want my Asian lady to be warm and stylish when she walks to the bus stop.
